Richmond Spiders Betting Preview

The Spiders posted a middling run out of the gate this year, and things have only gotten worse since then. Richmond won just seven of their first 15 games, then hit a losing streak versus George Mason, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Saint Louis, Davidson, George Washington, and VCU. A 3-2 run came next with wins over Duquesne, Fordham, and La Salle alongside losses to Davidson and Loyola Chicago. Since then it’s been four straight losses to Saint Joseph’s, VCU, Dayton, and George Mason in succession. That gives the Spiders a 10-21 record so far.

In the George Mason matchup on Saturday, the Spiders went into the break with a 32-24 edge. Richmond lost the handle from there on a 40-28 run and took the loss at the end 64-60. B. Artis White was the leading scorer in the loss with 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Mike Walz added 10 points with six boards and three assists, while Collin Tanner came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds in 27 minutes of work during the defeat.

Davidson Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the Davidson side, they were looking pretty good in mid-January but they’ve fallen off the table since then. The Wildcats posted a 12-4 run over their first 16 games, then lost to La Salle, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph’s, George Mason, and Dayton (with a win over Richmond) in the next six. After wins over Richmond and UMass came a 1-6 run with a lone win over Fordham mixed among losses to George Washington, Loyola Chicago, Saint Louis, VCU, Loyola, and Saint Bonaventure. In total over 31 games so far this year that gives the Wildcats a 16-15 record.

Back on Saturday versus St. Bonaventure, the Wildcats exited the locker room with a 34-34 tie. Davidson was outpaced 30-27 the rest of the way in a 64-61 loss. Connor Kochera led the team with 25 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Reed Bailey added 15 points with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal. Tops off the bench was Bobby Durkin with eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists in 36 minutes of action.

Richmond vs Davidson Prediction

I’ll lean toward Davidson but I’m probably staying away from this one. The Wildcats fell at home to a good St. Bonaventure team in their last outing but didn’t shoot too badly (43.4 percent). The trouble spots were the 36-28 rebounding deficit and the 12 turnovers for 15 Bonnies points. Davidson has lost four straight games now, but they’ve been within three points in two of those.

The good news for the Wildcats is that they’ve won both meetings with Richmond this year, 71-60 at home and 72-66 on the road. In the February 8 home win, the Wildcats shot a healthy 45.3 percent from the field with 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) from the line and a 35-25 rebounding edge. Davidson gave up just four turnovers along the way in a pretty nice overall effort. Richmond shot pretty well themselves (46.2 percent) but lost steam in the second half. I like Davidson to come out firing in this one as well. If they can avoid mistakes and keep their shooting percentage up the Wildcats should have the advantage here.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Davidson Wildcats -6.5
