Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng meet in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Italian Open Rome on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Here’s our Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng prediction. This preview will also include an Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng pick.

Aryna Sabalenka Preview

Aryna Sabalenka beat Marta Kostyuk for a second time in as many weeks to progress into the last eight of the Italian Open. The World No. 1 won the first set 6-1 in half an hour, firing two aces and saving both breakpoints she faced on serve. In the second set, Kostyuk raised her level as Sabalenka was the first to lose her serve towards the end. The Ukrainian led 5-3 and served to level the match, but was broken to love.

Sabalenka then had the chance to put the match to bed in the 12th game, but was broken and the set went into a tie-break. Kostyuk held a set point at 7-6, but it was saved. The Belarusian needed three match points to close out a victory 10-8 in the breaker. Sabalenka has now reached the quarterfinals in Rome for a third time. She was successful at this stage in the previous two visits. The 27-year-old is an impressive 11-1 on clay and will seek her second title of this year’s clay swing on Wednesday.

Qinwen Zheng Preview

Standing between Sabalenka and a spot in the semis is China’s Qinwen Zheng. The World No. 8 defeated Canada’s Bianca Andreescu in straight sets. Zheng raced to a 3-0 lead in the first, but lost her serve three times in succession, giving Andreescu an open chance to serve for a one-set lead. But Andreescu failed to cross the finish line. Zheng saved two set points and broke back in the 10th game. She broke Andreescu for a third time to seal the set 7-5 after an hour.

In the second set, Zheng’s stamina stood out. Andreescu, who hasn’t played a lot of tennis this year, could not keep up with the Chinese player’s endurance. Zheng broke her serve three times to seal a 7-5, 6-1 win.  Zheng improves to 5-2 on clay this term. It’s her second quarterfinal on the surface after reaching the same stage in Charleston last month. She has lost in the last eight in each of her last two trips to Rome.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng Head-To-Head

Sabalenka and Zheng have met six times on the WTA level. Sabalenka leads 6-0 with all meetings taking place on hard courts. This will be their first on clay.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng Prediction

You can pretty much bank on a comfortable Sabalenka win here. This is such a horrible matchup for Zheng, who has won one set in six meetings against Sabalenka, and not even a surface change will impact the result. She feels too rushed and too reactive when facing someone of the caliber and presence of Sabalenka.

The Belarusian’s power naturally overwhelms most of the tour and makes Zheng’s best attributes look dull on the court. Her game just breaks down under a barrage of pressure. Sabalenka’s tennis is the closest thing to a firework, and she’s been the best player this season by a mile. Zheng is unlikely to stop her.

Nur Said's Pick: Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets
