Daniil Medvedev is the 10th seed and former champion in Rome. He received a bye in the first round. The Russian kicked off his campaign this past week with a 6-4, 6-2 second-round win over former British No. 1 Cameron Norrie. In the third round, Medvedev bested Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-1. Popyrin entered the contest as one of the best servers on tour and among the most improved players in the last 12 months. But he was no match for Medvedev, whose return frustrated the Aussie.

Medvedev spent one and a half hours on the victory. He saved four break points in a crucial third game and broke Popyrin immediately after that. Medvedev was broken when he served for the set at 5-3, but would recover the break to seal the set in the 10th game. The second set was one-way traffic with Medvedev getting two breaks to complete a comfortable win. Medvedev improves to 6-2 on clay this season. He will chase a spot in the quarterfinals for a second successive ATP 1000.
