Peyton Stearns defeated Naomi Osaka in a third-set tie-break to reach the Rome quarterfinals for the first time. The 23-year-old American edged the four-time Grand Slam champion in easily a contender for the match of the tournament with some incredible shot-making and gusty play under pressure.

But Osaka, who was battling a blister during the match, relinquished that advantage in the fourth game. She has lost one set in the tournament. Svitolina has now won 12 of 13 matches this year, with her only defeat coming in Madrid at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka.

The Ukrainian loves a bit of time on the ball to set up points at will. But she won’t get that when up against Stearns’ sheer power. My only concern is how quickly the American bounces back from a physically brutal and emotionally intoxicating match, so I’m going to back Svitolina to scrape through.
