Peyton Stearns and Elina Svitolina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Italian Open Rome on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Here’s our Peyton Stearns vs Elina Svitolina prediction. This preview will also include a Peyton Stearns vs Elina Svitolina pick.
Peyton Stearns Preview
Peyton Stearns defeated Naomi Osaka in a third-set tie-break to reach the Rome quarterfinals for the first time. The 23-year-old American edged the four-time Grand Slam champion in easily a contender for the match of the tournament with some incredible shot-making and gusty play under pressure.
After the two players exchanged the first two sets, Stearns was the first to blink in the decider. She dropped her serve in the opening game of the third set. But Osaka, who was battling a blister during the match, relinquished that advantage in the fourth game. The two players then exchanged one break apiece before Stearns saved five breakpoints in a crucial ninth game.
Ultimately, it was a tie-break that decided matters, and Stearns completed another recovery, this time from 2-4 down to prevail 7-4 in the breaker. It is the second time in the tournament she has beaten a Grand Slam champion, having seen off compatriot Madison Keys in a deciding set tie-break in the last round. This will be her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal and her first on clay. She has also accounted for wins over Nuria Brancaccio and Anna Kalinskaya in the first week.
Elina Svitolina Preview
Elina Svitolina is the 16th seed in Rome and the two-time former champion ousted Iga Swiatek’s conqueror, Danielle Collins, to reach the last eight. Svitolina made it look so easy in the end, wrapping up a 6-4, 6-2 win in under one and a half hours.
Svitolina finished the match with three aces and five double faults. She landed only 46% of first serves in play but won 77% of first serve points (20/26). Svitolina won 47% of second serve points (14/30) and saved four of six breakpoints on her serve. Svitolina had beaten Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Hailey Baptiste in the opening two rounds. She has lost one set in the tournament. Svitolina has now won 12 of 13 matches this year, with her only defeat coming in Madrid at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka.
Peyton Stearns vs Elina Svitolina Head-To-Head
Stearns and Svitolina have never met before this. The head-to-head is deadlocked at 0-0.
Peyton Stearns vs Elina Svitolina Prediction
Stearns was outstanding against Naomi Osaka, ending the Japanese’s eight-match winning streak. That third set was of the highest order as both players brought the best out of each other. Stearns’ forehand is an absolute bomb, almost putting her opponents in damage-control mode, and she won’t let Svitoina settle and dictate in this massive quarterfinal. The Ukrainian loves a bit of time on the ball to set up points at will. But she won’t get that when up against Stearns’ sheer power. My only concern is how quickly the American bounces back from a physically brutal and emotionally intoxicating match, so I’m going to back Svitolina to scrape through.
