The Line: Betting Odds: Stefanos Tsitsipas -222 / Daniel Altmaier +177
Number 26 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the second round of the 2025 US Open. That match is scheduled for Thursday, August 28. Here’s our Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier prediction. This preview will also include a Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier pick.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier Preview
Stefanos Tsitsipas won his opening match of the 2025 US Open in four sets. Tsitsipas defeated France’s Alexandre Muller for a much-needed win, which is his 22nd for a difficult season. Tsitsipas lost a tight opening set 6-4 to Muller, but played some of his best tennis in the next two sets, losing just one game. The Greek had to stay composed in the fourth set, in which he let slip a 4-2 lead before winning it in a tiebreak.
The win comes as a massive relief for Tsitsipas, who had won once in his last eight competitive matches. He fired 41 winners to 25 unforced errors in the victory. Tsitsipas accounted for 16 aces and three double faults. He landed 59% of first serves in play and won 84% of first serve points (52/62). Tsitsipas won 58% of second serve points (25/43) and saved five of seven break points. Tsitsipas has not passed the second round of the US Open since 2021.
Daniel Altmaier comes into this year’s US Open unseeded, but the world no. 56 outlasted Serbia’s rising star Hamad Medjedovic in five sets. The match fell just 11 minutes short of the 5-hour mark. The match featured three tiebreak sets and one 12-game set. Altmaier scored the decisive break of serve in the fifth set to win it 6-4 and secure passage into the US Open second round for a second time.
The German one-hander hit 56 winners and 24 unforced errors, including 24 aces and three double faults. Altmaier landed 65% of first serves in play and won 81% of first serve points (95/118). Altmaier won 48% of second serve points (30/63) and saved one of four break points in the match. Altmaier had won two matches in five tournaments in the build-up to the US Open, but will look to reach the third round of the New York Slam for the first time when he faces Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier Head-To-Head
Tsitsipas and Altmaier have faced off once before. The Greek won a four-set second-round match between them at the 2024 French Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Daniel Altmaier Prediction
Tsitsipas and Altmaier are both one-handers who have a better record on clay and naturally fit to excel on slower surfaces. While Tsitsipas hasn’t offered any assurances in recent weeks about his form (one win in eight before the US Open), he can take plenty of positives from his four-set win over Muller. The Greek will start as the favorite here, and I think if he can find consistency in the first serve and move Altmaier around, he stands a chance of closing this out in four sets. Any dip, and Altmaier gave us a full demonstration of his endurance that he’s got the legs and belief to win it in five.
